City Of God

Posted by ollieg in Uncategorized

City of  God was Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund (co-director).

City of God is primarily about the slums of Brazil in Rio De  Janeiro, and the gang violence that happens in the slums.

there is gang violence in the slums because there is mo opportunities for jobs so the only way to survive is to join a gang. the life in the slums is a vicious cycle of killing, betrayal and corruption.

i feel that the film picks up on some serious issues, such as child abuse, corruption within the police force, it also picks on on a theme which is that peoples dreams in the slums are futile.

i feel that this is a very good film because it never has a dull part within the film, it also makes people aware of what went on in the slums and what is still going on today. it also shows the fact that people will not stop at anything to get to the top of the gangs, we see this with Lil’ Dice where he slaughters everyone is the hotel laughing at the same time.

i feel that this film has sad and happy parts to it. i think that this is a good film and would recomend it to anyone who enjoys this type of film.

Once Were Warriors Review

Posted by ollieg in Uncategorized

once were warriors is about the desperate struggle to make ends meat in the poverty stricken areas on New Zealand, one of the main characters names beth is a mother who is just trying to do what best for her family, but finding out it is not always good enough. Her violent husband Jake does not help the situation with his constant drinking and fighting. The film is a a real life film, it is not meant to make you feel happy, it depresses you, creating a mood that makes the viewer feel uneasy, especially the scene at the tree of the suicide. i did not especially enjoy this film because it does not make me feel good, and to be honest i don’t know anyone who enjoys feeling sad.
I feel that this is a good film however, because of the serious nature of the film, and the events and scenes that happen throughout this film.

La Haine review

This film is about three young boys who are always in and out of trouble with the law, shot in black and white the film shows the harsh Parisienne suburbs that they like in after the riots had taken place, showing that you can’t be weak to survive. The director has really focused on the fact that the area does not feel safe due to the riots that had taken place.
I feel with this film it was made to be like an American film, because of the violence and the gangs which is like a typical gangster American film. I feel this film is a good film, at times it was hard to follow because of the subtitles and because I am not used to watching films I found it hard.;
I feel that it is a good film but the ending I feel was cut short with just the shooting, it feels as the director did not know how to finish the film, so just cut it early.
